How can I review the status of the computer and peripherals for the virtual classroom?
At Advancity, we continuously adapt our products to new technologies and enhance them. In this article, we will discuss the essential components of a virtual classroom and how their conditions can positively or negatively impact the flow of the session. Additionally, we will cover how to review these components before starting a virtual class.
By checking the status or health of your computer and peripherals, you can provide your system administrator with detailed information in case of an issue during the virtual class, enabling them to resolve it faster.
Here’s a list of components you should review:
Computer or mobile device (phone or tablet)
Power supply
Internet connection
Audio output device (speakers or headphones)
Audio input device (microphone)
Browser
Mouse and keyboard
Up-to-date operating system and software
User feedback
Perculus Plus System Check
Our Must-Have: Computer or Mobile Device (Phone or Tablet)
Your computer or mobile device is indispensable. As a virtual classroom instructor, if you plan to conduct a live session using one of these devices, the device you use must meet certain performance standards.
For a smooth live lesson or conference, you must meet the following minimum system requirements. If your system falls below these specifications, you may experience disruptions or be unable to conduct the session.
What Should My Computer System Look Like?
RAM Capacity
Modern operating systems, software, and especially browsers consume significant RAM. For optimal performance, you need 8 GB of RAM. With less RAM, your system may freeze or terminate the live session due to full memory usage.
Processor Power
Like RAM, your computer needs sufficient processing power to run the OS and software. A quad-core 1.5 GHz processor is recommended for smooth live sessions.
Graphics Card Power
The GPU handles image processing. A 2 GB VRAM with 7000 MHz memory speed ensures adequate performance.
Storage Drive
While not a primary factor, your drive’s speed and free space matter. Always keep at least 10 GB of free space to avoid issues.
What About Phones and Tablets?
Tablets and phones come as pre-packaged devices. If your mobile device has 3 GB RAM and a quad-core 1.2 GHz processor, you should have no issues with live sessions.
Why Is Power on This List?
Because instructors may rely on battery power for laptops or mobile devices during live sessions. However, as battery levels drop, devices may throttle performance, negatively affecting the session. We recommend always using a plugged-in device.
Internet Connection?
A stable internet connection is the third most critical factor. For a smooth session, your upload and download speeds should be at least 1 Mbps. Lower speeds may reduce quality, causing freezes or disconnections.
Recommendation:
Ensure both instructors and participants have a minimum of 1 Mbps.
If speeds are inconsistent, share documents (PDFs) instead of screen sharing and use only microphone audio instead of webcam video.
Audio Output Devices 101…
Speakers or headphones are necessary to hear other instructors, participants, or video audio during the session.
What Should I Check?
If using speakers, ensure they are plugged in.
Test audio playback with a sound file or video.
Avoid echo loops: If multiple instructors are in the same room, use one speaker and one microphone or have only one person speak at a time.
Audio-video-microphone conflicts: If playing a video while speaking, participants may hear both the video audio and your microphone picking up the same sound, degrading quality.
Our Recommendation:
Always use headphones to avoid these issues.
Audio Input Device: Mic Check, One-Two-Three
A microphone is essential for live sessions. Before starting:
Ensure the mic is plugged in.
Test it via the OS sound recorder and the virtual classroom app.
Only begin the session once confirmed working.
The Rise of Browsers
Browsers have evolved since the dawn of the internet. For example, Flash Player support ended in late 2020, so outdated browsers won’t run Flash-based apps. Always keep your browser updated to stay compatible.
Use a Modern Browser:
Windows (desktop/mobile): Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge
Linux/Android: Google Chrome, Chromium-based browsers
macOS: Google Chrome
iOS 12.0+ (iPhone/iPad): Safari
Other modern browsers may work but could lack certain features.
Did My Keyboard and Mouse Break Too?
Before the session, test your frequently used peripherals (mouse and keyboard) to ensure they function properly.
Oops! A New Update Arrived!
For a smoother experience, keep your OS, software, and browser updated. Updates fix bugs and improve performance.
Important:
Never skip browser updates. Perculus Plus runs on browser technology, so outdated browsers may cause disruptions.
"Hey Everyone, Can You Hear and See Me?"
At the start of each session (or after breaks), ask participants for feedback. Verify if your webcam, microphone, and screen sharing are working. If issues arise, try restarting the sharing features or consult your system administrator.
Don’t Forget the Perculus Plus System Check!
Before starting, perform a system check to review:
Status: Features available during the session.
Camera: Test connected cameras.
Audio: Check speaker output.
Microphone: Test connected mics.
Connection: Verify internet stability.
