Scoring, within the realm of proctoring, serves as a fundamental system for assessing and quantifying the level of violations or irregularities observed during an exam or any monitored session. It functions as a critical aspect in maintaining the integrity of online assessments and examinations. Scoring provides a clear way to differentiate between candidates who have adhered to the rules and those who have violated them.
The Basics of Scoring
Irrespective of the proctoring mode in use, scoring remains a feature accompanying every proctored session. It essentially represents the sum of points assigned to the violations observed during the session. Its primary purpose is to identify and flag any candidates who may have potentially violated the rules or engaged in suspicious behavior during the examination.
Understanding the Scoring Spectrum
In Archive, each session is marked with a colour scale, typically represented by three colors: red, yellow and green. This visual representation acts as a quick indicator of the level of suspicion associated with a particular session. The color on the scale serves as a visual clue regarding the extent of rule violations:
- Red: Marked in red, a session indicates that the cumulative score for violations exceeds the defined threshold for a violator. Such sessions clearly identify infringing users.
- Yellow: Sessions marked in yellow signify that the cumulative score for violations is near the maximum allowable threshold. In such cases, suspicion surrounds the users as they approach the limits of acceptable behavior.
- Green: Green indicates that the accumulated points for violations fall well below the defined threshold. In such cases, the behavior of users during the session is considered non-critical and far from violating the established rules.
How Scoring is Calculated
Scoring is calculated using a specialized formula developed by our engineers. This formula considers several factors, including the duration of the video, the nature of each violation, and their respective coefficients, as well as the total number of violations.
Each violation is assigned a coefficient, which is pre-set on our server but can also be customized in the Dashboard for the exam. Some coefficients can be passed through the API for greater flexibility and control (See API Guide in our Documentation portal).
The final score takes into account various parameters, including:
- Violation Weight: This weight is determined as a percentage and depends on the duration of the violation and the session itself. If the end of the session time is not known, the current duration is used.
- Scoring Points for the Violation: The score for each violation is calculated based on a percentage weight of the violation, the violation coefficient, and an additional duration-enhancing coefficient. The sum of these scores contributes to the overall scoring of the session.
