Your microphone is muted

    This article provides instructions on how to solve the issue when the first step fails with the error message "Your microphone is muted". 

    Symptoms 

    Unable to start the exam because the system check has failed. The system has detected that the microphone on your computer is disabled.

    The problem is shown in the screenshot below.

    Causes

    The microphone is disabled on your computer. 

    Resolution  

    Windows

    1. Press the Windows logo key + R.
    2. In the "Run" dialog box that appears, enter "mmsys.cpl" and press Enter
    3. Navigate to the Recording tab.
    4. Locate and double-click on the active microphone device.
    5. In the General tab, check if the microphone device is Enabled:
    6. Navigate to the Levels tab. 
    7. Unmute the microphone if it's muted, and raise the volume level:
    8. Restart the Constructor Proctor system check.

    macOS

    1. Go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sound > Input.
    2. Check the microphone volume and sensitivity levels to ensure they are set at an adequate level, and confirm that the correct microphone is selected as the active input device.
